Look inside the glass doors leading to the tenements upstairs and you’ll find this corroded plaque. The doors are to the left of Kalustyan’s Middle East Deli. Who would ever look there for a plaque marking a Presidential inauguration?
Chester Alan Arthur’s presidential statue in nearby Madison Square Park gives no hint of why it’s there in the first place. You need to walk a few blocks east to 123 Lexington Avenue to discover the reason: Arthur was a neighborhood boy.
